Cacti and succulents can be a viable solution to a problem area! This series of pictures show how cacti and succulents can provide a colorful and interesting solution to common problems encountered by many of today's new home owners. In this case a small, steep and narrow back yard was converted into a dramatic display of rare and endangered plants. Cacti and succulents planted on the slope solved several problems. First they provide an interesting and colorful outdoor area. The plants are easy to maintain and require significantly less water and care than a traditional grass lawn. The area always look great and when the plants are flowering the view is nothing short of spectacular. When developing an area such as this we suggest that you take a slow approach. Don't try to do it all at once. Adding one, or at most a couple of plants at a time will allow you to decide just what you want in your garden. Things to consider when planting your area include, but are not limited to, the color shape and texture of each plant, the kind of flowers each plant produces (both size and color), the flowering cycle of the plant and the size that the mature plant will ultimately reach. Some of these plants may have thorns and so you might want to consider planting them away from pathways or areas where they may be a hazard to unsuspecting persons or animals. Notice that many of the plants are in decorative pots. This allows the owner to see how that particular plant looks in that place in the planting. Obviously this arrangement would allow the owner to try the plant in various places before deciding where it will be permanently planted. An additional benefit in geographic areas where extreme temperatures may be a factor, leaving the more delicate plants in pots would allow for moveing the plants to a sheltered environment during very cold or hot periods that might otherwise damage delicate or valuable plants. Some of the plants in these pictures came from our nursery. The owner of this yard graciously allowed us to display his work for you to see. As other of our customers share pictures of their gardens/yards/planters we will post them on this page for your viewing pleasure. Of course if you have any questions regarding the plants displayed we will be happy to answer them.
